Wayfinding Signs: Business Direction and Navigation Signs

Is your business a large recreational or interior space where people can swim, fish, ride bicycles, ride horses, hike, and other outdoor activities? Do you have many floors or hallways that can be confusing for customers to navigate? One problem with running this type of business is that customers might easily lose their way. That's why you might be forced to hire guides for them.

But you might not have to do that. Wayfinding signs are ready to take on the task of guiding customers. So what are these? These are a type of signage having graphics that tell people where to go, indicate the locations of the features of the business (in case of large buildings and grounds), and convey particular do's and don'ts while being on the premise of your business.

What Are The Types of Wayfinding Signs?

You have 4 types of wayfinding signs to choose from - informational, regulatory, directional, and identification. When installed together, all of these work hand in hand to allow customers to utilize the building or ground that your business uses.

Informational Wayfinding Signs - this wayfinding sign allows customers to know where they currently are. If your business has a building or ground map, informational exterior wayfinding signs can also guide people about other nearby accessible areas.

Regulatory Wayfinding Signs - "Don't walk on the grass! Littering is strictly prohibited!" Surely, you've seen these signs before. The formal name for them is a regulatory exterior wayfinding sign, which suggests to people what they can do and can't do as per your business's bylaws.

Directional Wayfinding Signs - Those signs which provide you an idea of which terminal to go is a perfect example of this. Directional exterior wayfinding signs allow customers to find a location in your business's building or ground with the absence of a map. This exterior wayfinding sign works best in conjunction with informational exterior wayfinding signs.

Identification Wayfinding Signs - This wayfinding sign tells people about the purpose of a particular location or what is it in general. It's common to find identification wayfinding signs in zoos, hotels, motels, public pools, ski resorts, and other business locations where people usually use a particular space for their convenience.

Are There Laws That Regulate The Use Of Wayfinding Signs?

Both Exterior and Interior wayfinding signs that you use for your business should comply with the standards set by ADA. The following are the general characteristics of ADA compliant exterior wayfinding signs:

  • Large fonts without decorations to prevent eye strain and to clearly convey the message ( very important for regulatory wayfinding signs, identification wayfinding signs, and informational wayfinding signs)
  • W color motif that uses bright and dark colors for better visibility when viewed from afar (note: other sources say that contrast should be only limited to black/white or white/black but according to our experience, any color is okay so long as proper contrast is achieved)
  • Wayfinding signs, no matter which type, should use the san serif script and uppercase; shouldn't be engraved or printed in italic and other similar ways.
  • Placement of wayfinding signs should comply with what's provided by the provisions of ADA and SAD.

When To Use Wayfinding Signs?

Wayfinding signs are for you if your business uses a large or complex interior or exterior space for business operations, and wherein the space contains features for the customers to enjoy or utilize. (Including: hallways, maps, eating areas, entrances,  exits, parking, etc) Their installation will cut costs on guides and other known methods in making people accustomed to the space of your business.

You don't have to use wayfinding signs if your business uses an outside space that's no bigger than the front yard of the average American house. Wayfinding signs are only needed if your business uses a ground/space where customers can lose track of their direction.
